I hate writing reviews, so let me sum up: 5/26 Eels w/ Smoosh at the Roxy

Sort of a last minute decision to go to this show, but I'm glad I went.
First up, let me just say that the Roxy's practice of charging the under 21s three dollars extra, cash, at the door is pretty low rent. Especially when the opening band is under 16.
Smoosh, the U16 openers were really, really good. Driving keys and some surprisingly funkified drums from two little girls was pretty rad. Their label, Barsuk, has a free track from the forth coming album, free to stay for download so you can check out Asya and Chloe in action for yerself.
Eels were totally different from the mellow band that I saw oh, six years or so ago, and seemed and looked like the garage/lounge soundtrack to Terry Gilliam's Brazil. Think Rivers Cuomo and David Lee Roth as members of the Kingsmen. Dog Faced Boy, Souljacker Pt. I, Last Stop This Town and Rags to Rags all were awesome. They also did kickass covers of I Put a Spell on You and That's Life. And after the first encore, which saw Smoosh come out and sing backing and dance with Crazy Al to Cancer for the Cure and Mr. E's Beautiful Blues, E, the Chet and the gang came back out five minutes later after the lights had gone on to rip through another song. Who knows, they could still be playing.
If you missed 'em and you're really bummed, they're playing Sunday in Santa Ana at the Galaxy.

Thus ends the first I hate writing reviews, so let me sum up.

ADDENDUM:
Here's some low quality video of Smoosh dancing and Eels playing during the first encore.
